The Linen Project

A beautiful article about SPREI and 1m2 vlas, written by Vanessa Oostijen. Thanks to de Volkskrant!

‘For the new project SPREI, which will start in mid-March, coinciding with the 1m2 project, you buy a linen bedspread, the seeds of which still need to be planted. With this purchase, you as the owner are connected to the entire process of creating the future bedspread.

Willemien Ippel, co-founder of The Linen Project: ‘At the beginning of April, the seeds will go into the ground. The buyer of the bedspread will be kept informed of all the processes by the various people involved: the farmer, the spinner and the weaver.’

Where for a napkin, you need to sow 1 square meter of flax, for a double bedspread, about 150 square meters of land is required. This part will be handled by the Hooge Polder farm of Willem Groenenberg in the Biesbosch.

The Zeeland company Van de Bilt Zaden en Flax BV, which has several links in the flax production chain under one roof, will process the flax. Since there is no industrial spinning mill in the Netherlands anymore, the spinning of the flax fiber into yarn will take place in Northern France or Poland.

The weaving of the bedspread will be done at Enschede Textielstad, a sustainable industrial weaving mill. Here, you can pick up your bedspread at the end of the process. During the different stages, webinars and observation days will be organized for the bedspread owners.’
