In the project 100% amsterdams textiel, an iconic piece of clothing is being designed for the Mayor of Amsterdam as part of Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary. Waag’s TextileLab and The Linen Project will develop a garment using Amsterdam-produced raw materials, in collaboration with the local maker community. Through this initiative, we aim to inspire and stimulate new forms of business where textiles, from cultivation to design to clothing, are produced within the city limits.
From the city’s textile tradition and modern craftsmanship, new value chains based on sustainability and circularity can emerge. The flax and dyes are grown within the city limits. Both Waag and The Linen Project believe in alternative value chains in which circular maker communities are activated. This project demonstrates that alternative production chains based on the principles of sustainability and the ‘doughnut economy’ are possible.
