The linen project investigates and works towards reactivating the economic viability of small-scale local flax cultivation and linen production in the Netherlands.

Since 2018, The Linen Project has been exploring how a local linen production chain can take shape in the 21st century—both industrially and by hand. Recognizing the interconnectedness of all elements, the project sees the linen chain as a model for a new economic system—one that prioritizes values such as collectivity, care, proximity, sustainability, reciprocity, and appreciation for all involved partners. Rather than focusing on transactions, the emphasis lies on relationships—between people and with nature.

Over the past two years, The Linen Project has acted as a connector, bringing attention to linen at various scales—from partners in the industrial chain to shared stewardship and the accessible participation projects 1m2 vlas and SPREI. All these value models come together in The Linen Economy. By establishing a dynamic environment for research and production, the project’s learning by doing approach unites and highlights the value of natural, social and cultural resources.

The Linen Project is an initiative of Crafts Council Nederland. The core team currently consists of Willemien Ippel, Guusje Heesakkers and Joan den Exter.

The Linen Project seeks to reinstate the economy as a social, ecological and cultural domain, activating new ecosystems in the process. It is committed to identifying, evolving and strengthening socio-economic patterns rooted in a commoning approach. Participation, reciprocity and mutuality are at the core of its activities, fostering interactions that go beyond financial growth.

The project also activates the inherent connections between cultural heritage, education, agriculture, design, crafts and the economy. A growing awareness of this interdependence fuels the exchange of diverse values, knowledge, skills and competencies—generating insights for all involved and guiding the continued evolution of The Linen Project.
